Everyone has a story to tell.

I’ll help you tell it in a book you’re proud of.

After writing and publishing two of my own books (and counting!) and working with business owners on buttoning up theirs for publishing, I'm intimately familiar with what it takes to go from idea to holding your book in your hands.

EDITORIAL SERVICES

If you have a finished manuscript (the fancy way of saying "book draft"), I can support you with…

  • Developmental / Content Editing

  • Copy Editing

  • Proofreading

  • Book Coaching

  • Self-Publishing & Marketing

Developmental/Content Editing & Copy Editing

When you're done with your book draft (ahem… manuscript) … first, YAY! Remember to celebrate! You'll have a professional edit of your book.

Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a sentence that you can't seem to write your way out of? Maybe you've read confusing sentences like this that left you scratching your head. Copy editing requires going line by line, looking for grammar, formatting, consistency, and more.

This kind of edit makes sure your overall structure, flow, tone, and clarity are solid. We'll also want to make sure the book accomplishes the goals you've set for it.

This includes intuitive copy edits, restructuring, and rewriting some key sentences for flow and readability. Most copy edits happen during a developmental edit.

I have a gift for sensing what might be left unsaid in the pages of your book. Some call this "reading between the lines."

This stage of editing is a heavy lift where I edit for:

  • Appropriate tone for your target reader

  • Structure and flow of sentences, chapters, and sections

  • Consistency of language and rhythm

  • Language variety

  • Clarity, engagement, and readability

  • Visual flow

With my copyediting services for your book, I put on my reading glasses (I've wanted glasses my whole life and finally needed them for reading in my 40s) and read your book draft one line at a time, fixing grammar and spelling, sprucing up your word choices, fixing those capitalization and punctuation problems as I go.

A love note on grammar: Sometimes we break grammar rules and throw them out the window for impact and clarity. If you're a stickler for following "rules" I'm probably not the best editor for you. I'll be happy to send you to another editor.

Time frame: 4-8 weeks

Investment: $100/hour

Typically $2500 to $6500

Proofreading

This is the final step in making sure your manuscript is ready for print. This happens after your developmental and copy edit.

During proofreading, I check for any remaining mistakes, including cross-checking the table of contents and verifying pages, headers, indexing, and references.

Because sneaky little errors can find their way into every professionally edited book, I recommend multiple rounds of proofreading your printed copies. If I did developmental or copy edits on your book, I'll outsource proofreading to someone I work with regularly. You want fresh eyeballs on your project.

Anyone close to your book — your editor and yourself — will miss the little things. If I proofread your book with fresh eyes, I'll catch all those little things. I follow structured methods to review your work — the same ones I followed in writing my own books.

Investment: $55/hour

Book Coaching

When you're not sure where to start with writing your book or you've started but feel stuck, having a book writing coach by your site can make all the difference. With a guide, you'll have regular accountability, structure, and advice at every step.

When you're in the process of writing and editing your book, you'll want to keep your momentum going. This is where most potential authors stall out. They bump into an obstacle or feel fuzzy on where to go next, so they end up letting their book drafts collect dust. As your coach, we won't let that happen!

Book coaching is for you if:

  • You have an idea for your book and don't know where to start

  • You have a rough outline and want support to make sure you're on the right track

  • You've started writing and feel stuck

  • You're done writing your draft and need support with staying motivated to finish edits, publish, and market your book

Book coaching includes:

  • Support with outlining

  • Suggestions for a consistent writing schedule

  • Advice on how to start writing from your outline

  • Endless motivation

  • Busting through creative blocks

  • Access to everything inside The Intuitive Writing School community — live writing sessions, workshops, and community

  • Step-by-step guidance on how to keep making progress each week — you'll always know exactly what to do next

  • Developmental edits on your writing each week of up to 10,000 words to help improve your writing

  • Weekly high fives and celebrations from your biggest cheerleader – me

How book coaching works:

Step 1: We'll meet for 90 minutes to discuss your book project, goals, and time frame. During this first call, we can outline your book and set your writing schedule and next steps.

Step 2: You write! I'll be available to you on Voxer if you get stuck at any point.

Step 3: We'll meet for 30 minutes each week to review your progress, discuss feedback, and set your goals for the coming week.

Step 4: Each week, you'll share your writing with me, and I'll review for tone, flow, consistency, and grammar stuff, too.

Time frame: Minimum 12 weeks with monthly extensions as needed after that.

Investment: $2000/month.

Most clients finish their drafts within three months and have plans for revisions and marketing. Occasionally, some clients need more than three months to finish their drafts.

Top Questions About Book Coaching

  • Writing a book takes time and consistent effort. The 12-week minimum commitment gives us a sound foundation to see progress in not just your word count, but your writing skills.

As your personal writing coach, I'm supporting you in clarifying your authentic voice. You'll learn writing skills that will serve you for life.

  • Book coaching includes some developmental edits. You'll get developmental edits on up to 10,000 words each week plus we'll discuss feedback during our weekly check-in calls.

  • Yes. This stage is called copy editing and is completed once your manuscript is done. The plus side of working with me as your coach and developmental editor as you write is that your draft will be in good shape and have a great foundation for copy edits. Meaning your copy editor will need less time (and a lower investment). I have a handful of copy editors I trust, and will facilitate your copy edits if you like.

  • Nonfiction and memoir. That means no fiction, romance or anything else. There are certain topics that if they're misaligned with my values, then I might recommend you work with another editor or coach.

Self-Publishing Support

Should you self-publish your book or find a publisher?

It’s time to publish your book! YAY! You’ve got options:

  1. Traditional Publishing — a publisher or agent pays you to write your book.

  2. Hybrid Publishing — you pay a publisher and keep most of your profits.

  3. Vanity Publishing — watch for predators here! You pay to use their label.

  4. Self-Publishing — you publish your book and keep your profits

Self-publishing is where I can support you.

For my books, Unfussy Life and Intuitive Writing, I went straight to self-publishing. I created a publishing company before publishing my second book (this is also an option for you) — Sovereign Owl Publishing. You might choose to publish with Sovereign Owl Publishing if we work together on your book, or publish your book under your own publishing company name (don’t worry, this doesn’t automatically mean you need to create a new business).

Here’s what I’ll support you with:

  • Book set up with KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing / Amazon) and IngramSpark for print-on-demand

  • Buying and setting up your own ISBNs through Bowker

  • Book pricing

  • Prepare your files for each platform and upload — the book interior, cover files, and ebook files

  • ARC reviews and getting helpful beta reader feedback

  • Author website writing, design, and development

  • Marketing and release planning

Investment: $1500 to $5500
